Pricing Readiness Poll: What Are the Common Blockers?

Most conversations about AI in pricing start with the technology. But perhaps we should start somewhere less interesting: whether the organization is in a position to use it at all.

Readiness is not one thing. A company can be strong in some areas while still stalling in others that matter.

1. Data quality and accessibility

Transaction history sits in the ERP, win-loss in the CRM, discounts in a spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand.

Product codes differ across markets.

Some periods are missing entirely.

This is one of the usual suspects stopping AI and pricing initiatives alike.

2. Strategy, ownership, and process

Nobody owns pricing outright.

Decisions get made in several places on different logic.

Discounting happens by exception often enough that the exception is the process.

There is no agreed answer to what the company is optimizing for.

This is why pricing ends up neglected even when everyone agrees it matters.

3. Skills and analytics

The gap here is more than a shortage of analysts.

It is often the absence of someone who can bridge both sides — commercial enough to know when a recommended price looks wrong, and technical enough to understand why the model produced it.

Success lies at the intersection of three pillars: the algorithm, software, and business knowledge.

4. Appetite for experimentation and executive support

Pilots that are discussed but never scheduled.

Sponsorship that is enthusiastic at kick-off and absent at the second review.

A reasonable, well-founded organizational caution about changing prices at all.

None of that is irrational. But for some companies, it may be the entire reason nothing has moved in a few years.

This is a known paradox: companies reluctant to adopt AI in pricing despite its proven impact.

The poll question

If you are working on AI in pricing — or trying to, or have quietly stopped:

Which of these is currently the biggest barrier to AI in pricing adoption in your organization?

•    Data quality and accessibility

•    Strategy, ownership, and process

•    Skills and analytics

•    Appetite for experimentation and executive support

The poll is running on LinkedIn.

We'll publish the results and an expanded AI in Pricing Maturity assessment later, so stay tuned.
