The new Pro plan

Here’s what the new Pro plan offers:

🚀 Advanced Models: Access to the latest AI models, including o1 pro.

🔓 No restrictions: Offers unlimited usage of all features and models.

The Facts

➡️ 10x the cost of the standard plan, but offers Advanced AI models like GPT-o1 Pro and Unlimited usage.🚀

➡️ Adoption is less than 10% of users, according to various sources.

➡️ OpenAI CEO Sam Altman admitted that no pricing study was conducted, he just picked a number that felt right.😟 The plan is currently unprofitable.

The DEBATE

➡️ Critics: Pricing without proper research and preparation is reckless. Limited traction and no profitability = a flop. No CEO should single-handedly decide pricing so lightly.

➡️ Supporters: It’s a niche product for heavy users, so low adoption is expected. In fast-moving AI markets, trial and error is the strategy. This could also prep customers for price increases on other plans.

My TAKE

💡 OpenAI is leading the AI pricing discussion but missed opportunities to validate and refine their approach.

👉 Here’s what they could’ve done better:

✔ Involve the CEO in pricing strategy, but don’t let him decide alone and without facts.

✔ Conduct a quick pricing study – 1 to 2 months would’ve been enough to gain insights.

✔ Pilot the plan with a smaller user base before a full-scale launch.
